70년대에 브라이언이 제게 해준 말이 있는데, 제가 진정으로 즐기는 일에 집중하는 데 늘 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 그는 이렇게 말했죠. “데이비드, 우리네 인생의 수많은 영역 중에서 예술은 '비행기를 추락시키고도 아무 일 없다는 듯 걸어 나올 수 있는' 유일한 장소라는 걸 명심해야 해.” 정말 맞는 말입니다. 무언가를 창조한다는 건 조심스러워하거나 주저해서는 안 되는 영역이에요. 설령 감당하기 힘들 정도로 처참한 난장판을 만들더라도 괜찮습니다. 다시 손을 뻗어 상황을 가다듬고, 또 다른 방향으로 거침없이 뛰어들면 되니까요. 그러니 뛰어드는 것 자체를 절대 두려워해서는 안 됩니다.
Once said something to me in the ’70s that’s always helped me focus on what I enjoy. He said, David, you must remember that in all the functions we have in life, art is the one place where we can crash our plane and walk away from it. And that’s so right. Creating something is the one area where you mustn’t have caution or inhibition. If you make a startling, disastrous mess, it’s fine, because you can reach out and reevaluate and plunge off into another direction. But never be scared to do the plunging.
예술은 실패해도 안전한 실험실이다. 만드는 과정에서 주저하지 말고, 망해도 다시 방향을 틀어 더 멀리 나아가면 된다.
